Fractions...they are so very difficult for students to fully grasp when they are first introduced. Well, I should say they seem super easy because you split a pizza up and count the pieces, but then when you have to figure out a fraction of a number OR a fraction on a number line kids have a problem visualizing how and what they looks like.
I introduced fractions of a set (1/4 of 20) and students just did not like the sound of them! But, as soon as I showed them that it was a simple division problem they all just took off. Some students still struggle with division but they at least have the strategies to do a division problem. Once relating it back to division they could clearly see the relationship between the concept of division and the concept of fractional sets.
Fractions has been super challenging for a lot of my students, especially putting it onto a number line but we've started using manipulative s so I'm hoping to see a huge improvement once their little hands get wrapped around a 1/4 piece and clearly see it's smaller then 1/2!
